Actor Samuel L Jackson is to receive the 23rd American Cinematheque Award for his “significant contribution to the art of the motion picture”.

The Pulp Fiction star will receive his award - given in recent years to Julia Roberts, George Clooney and Al Pacino - in Beverly Hills on 1 December.

“Samuel L Jackson is a professional’s movie star,” said Rick Nicita, chair of the American Cinematheque board.

The actor’s many films include George Lucas’s three Star Wars prequels.

“The obvious talent and commitment that he brings to each role has resulted in what is arguably the highest total box office gross of any actor in movie history,” continued Nicita.

Jackson, who turns 60 in December, can currently be seen in the US as a malevolent LAPD officer in the thriller Lakeview Terrace.

The American Cinematheque has been honouring actors, directors and writers since its inception in 1986.

The non-profit organisation, which owns and operates two historic cinemas in Los Angeles, uses the event to raise money to support aspiring film-makers.

Skip is the nerd out of the GSFN partnership. Skip enjoys nothing more than good sci-fi and horror, be it on the big screen, TV or in a book. He also likes the bad stuff too. Skip also has a thing for faces and continuously likes to point out actors from one film to the next, much to the annoyance of Drew.
