Haley will play Freddy Krueger in the Platinum Dunes remake
Jackie Earle Haley is the New Freddy Krueger
Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) will play the new Freddy Krueger in New Line Cinema’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, scheduled for an April 16, 2010 release. The role was originally played by Robert Englund.
Samuel Bayer is directing the relaunch, which was written by Wesley Strick. The movie starts filming on May 5 in Chicago.
The Haunting in Connecticut star Kyle Gallner has been cast as Quentin in the film as well.
Platinum Dunes’ Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing. John Rickard is co-producing.
“Looking at his performance in ‘Watchmen,’ here’s a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him,” Bayer told The Hollywood Reporter. “And in ‘Nightmare,’ he is going to be under prosthetic make-up. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character.”
Bayer called this take of Krueger “Nosferatu meets Ed Gaines.”

This concept piece was created by Christopher Johnson IV (and crew) for his agent Robert Depp at the Beverly Hecht Agency to demonstrate his passion and take for a 21st Century Freddy Krueger. Depp is (see news above) was working to land an audition for Johnson with the Platinum Dunes camp and their casting people for the roll of Freddy.
Nightmare on Elm Street remake story details
GeekTyrant has posted some plot spoilers for the Nightmare remake and the new story does actually sound good.
- Freddy is a child molester.
- Freddy is no longer a Janitor but a Gardener and handy man.
- He will come back with the classic sweater, hat, and his famous glove of death.
- Freddy does not have very much dialogue.
- They say he is a strait up scary Bastard.
- Freddy’s Teen victims are not just being punished for his death that is brought on by the victims parents but these are the kids that told on him in the first place.
- There is also a little possibility that the kids who ratted him out lied about what he had done and it was the parents that were molesting their own kids. Wow.
- One of the scripts strongest points is how Freddy’s back story will be told.
