Buffy the Vampire Slayer

No Whedon, no Gellar, no Scooby Gang. No point?

Looks like Buffy the Vampire Slayer is going to get a big screen reboot courtesy of Hollywood, but without Joss Whedon’s involvement. I’m sorry but that ain’t right!!!

Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original 1992 movie starring Kirsty Swanson which spawned the television series, is developing the relaunch with Vertigo Entertainment. The characters and canon created in the television series will be completely abandoned.

According to Reuters, the goal would be to “make a darker, event-sized movie” with “franchise potential.” The story would follow a new vampire slayer who must step up to protect the new generation. Kuzui says the the new movie will hopefully take “Buffy into a new place.”

Now don’t get me wrong, I quite liked the movie when I saw it (I was young). However, Joss Whedon took Buffy back to what he intended and created one of the best show on television. Add the spin series Angel and the various comic books and novels, well does it really justify a reboot?

General consensus amongst the film websites is a resounding no, especially considering Joss Whedon’s lack of involvement. Also consider this, while Kuzui has the rights to use the Buffy character, adding the Scooby Gang is more complicated due to the other parties that own the rights to those characters.
