Sci-fi shots: Bond, Predators, Terminators and Mummy sequels

Daily digest of some of the sci-fi and fantasy news that’s caught our eye including: Benedict Cumberbatch in Bond 24; Predators and Terminator sequels; coke-head Carrie Fisher (love her); and a new Mummy film.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the next Bond villain?

Bond producers are looking to lock down Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain in Bond 24.

Predators and Terminator sequels unlikely

First up: Predators. The 2010 Robert Rodriguez sequel starring Adrien Brody was a pretty darn good flick, and a return to form for a franchise that had gotten off the rails as of late.

According to Robert Rodriguez, director of the 2010 movie Predators, a recent shake-up at 20th Century Fox has likely derailed any chances for a seque anytime soon – “We were thinking about it. I don’t know, I’ll have to talk to them. They just had a regime change over there – we’ll see what happens.”

And Arnold Schwarzenegger recently told Empire, “I think (producer) Megan Ellison owns the rights to ‘Terminator 16,’ or whatever it is. They have been trying to put a script together but I’ve not seen it, so I’ve no idea. There’s nothing on the drawing board at this point. Nothing on the plan.”

So it looks like neither franchise will be making it back onto the big screen for some foreseeable time.

J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron to team up for new pilot

J.J. Abrams is set to produce a possible new show for NBC. Alfonso Cuaron, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, will co-write and direct the pilot. The as yet untitled pilot is about a girl with special powers that will grow over seven years, and the man who is broken out of prison to protect her until then.

Carrie Fisher on cocaine while filming Star Wars

Carrie Fisher has been quite open about her drug past while working on the Star Wars trilogy. Circulating the web this week, is this fun fact – you can actually see evidence of it in The Return of the Jedi. Check out her first finger on co-star Harrison Ford’s shoulder.

In other interviews Carrie Fishers has given over the years, she recalls partaking in drug taking with members of the Star Wars cast on the Hoth set.

Len Wiseman to direct ‘The Mummy‘ remake for 2014

Producers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jon Spaihts, with Universal are bringing The Mummy back to the big screen after the successful franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz .

The trio have chosen Len Wiseman to direct the remake, and this time The Mummy will have a modern setting.

When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.

Danie Ware signing Ecko Rising

Danie Ware will be reading from and signing her stunning debut novel, Ecko Rising (Titan Books) at the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Thursday 20th September from 6 – 7pm.

Click the cover to order your signed copy from Forbidden Planet

Ecko: Rising follows a savage, gleefully cynical anti-hero immersed in his own fantasy world. Ecko joins a misfit cast of characters and strives to conquer his deepest fears and save the world. Danie says, “Ecko: Rising is sardonic fantasy, a sharp new slant on the genre, scattered with a healthy dusting of sex, violence and sarcasm. I’ve read fantasy, on and off, since I was a teen – and you can’t put a new twist on something unless you fell in love with it to start with! I wanted to push back its boundaries, make it do something different, something smarter and darker – but also something that we’d understand and recognise.”

Danie Ware is the publicist and event organiser for cult entertainment retailer Forbidden Planet. She has been immersed in the science-fiction and fantasy community for the past decade. An early adopter of blogging, social media and a familiar face at conventions, she appears on panels as an expert on genre marketing and retailing.

John and Carole Barrowman signing Torchwood: Exodus Code

Forbidden Planet are delighted to announce a signing by John and Carole E Barrowman for Torchwood: Exodus Code (BBC Books) at our London Megastore on Thursday September 20th, from 6 – 7pm.

Click the cover to order your signed copy from Forbidden Planet

It starts with a series of unexplained events. Earth tremors across the globe. Women being driven insane by their heightened and scrambled senses. And the world is starting to notice – the Twitter trend is #realfemmefatales. Governments and scientists are bewildered and silent. The world needs Torchwood, but there’s not much of Torchwood left.

Captain Jack has tracked the problem to its source: a village in Peru, where he’s uncovered evidence of alien involvement. In Cardiff, Gwen Cooper has discovered something alien and somehow connected to Jack. If the world is to be restored, she has to warn him – but she’s quickly becoming a victim of the madness too…

John became Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who in May 2005 and appeared in eleven episodes of the hit show, before taking the lead role in Torchwood. He’s had starring roles on stage and television, including his popular BBC entertainment show Tonight’s The Night.

Carole is Professor of English and Director of Creative Studies in Writing at Alverno College in Milwaukee. She writes a monthly crime fiction column and regular reviews and features for newspapers. She contributed a chapter to the Hugo award-winning non-fiction anthology Chicks Dig Time Lords.

Please note: pre-orders on this title may be limited. At the event itself, John and Carole will only be signing copies of their books. Thank you.

Click the cover to order your signed copy from Forbidden Planet.

Following his astounding debut, Adam Christopher will be reading from and signing an exclusive limited edition of his new novel Seven Wonders (Angry Robot) at the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Thursday 6th September from 6 – 7pm.

Tony Prosdocimi lives in the bustling Metropolis of San Ventura – a city gripped in fear, a city under siege by the hooded supervillain, The Cowl. When Tony develops super-powers and acts to take down The Cowl, however, he finds that the local superhero team Seven Wonders aren’t as grateful as he assumed they’d be…

“This is traditional heroism with a decidedly wicked and iconoclastic twist. Inventive, engaging, bewitching, and delightful, a feast as much for fans of the tropes as for the innocents amongst us.” – Greg Rucka, New York Times bestselling author of Alpha, The Punisher and Batman

“A blast of pure pleasure. This is Watchmen meets NYPD Blue, while The Incredibles stroll by; fast-moving action infused with Christopher’s infectious love of pulp fiction and the superhero genre.”
