Chris Meloni is joining the fifth series of True Blood this summer and the vampire Roman. Meloni plays the extremely powerful and ancient vampire Roman, the guardian of the governing body for all vampires, the Vampire Authority. He’s also the mastermind behind the mainstreaming movement, which aimed to integrate vampires into human society.

HBO has also release some promotional posters featuring the tagline “everything is at stake”.

True Blood returns to FX UK this autumn, meaning we don’t have to wait too long after the US airings.

This new clip from Marvel’s The Avengers (I refuse to call it Avengers Ass-emble) was shown a couple days ago on the Graham Norton Show. It features Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) trying to talk Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) into joining the team.

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers is out on 4th May and stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Hiddleston.

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

It seems that Richard Branson’s time travel themed advertising for Virgin’s Tivo service has the BBC a little miffed. Why? It stars David Tennant, mostly known for his time travelling role as the Doctor in the Beeb’s sci-fi series Doctor Who.

While Virgin says the advert is about Branson’s “love of exploration” and not cashing in on Doctor Who (which features as one of the on demand series), the BBC’s view is less than forgiving.

“We should ensure that the BBC brand is not used to endorse outside companies or organisations,” the BBC said in a statement. “We can achieve this by ensuring commercial advertising, promotion and press releases by outside companies do not give the impression of BBC endorsement, and advertising does not ‘pass off’ BBC programmes.”

Total Recall remake starring Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid – played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 hit movie of the same name. Judging by the footage below, I think I’m going to like director Len Wiseman’s take on Philip K. Dick’s short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. I just hope the fight scene with Quaid’s two love interests (Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel) kicks as much ass as Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin’s.

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Only a few more days to the UK release of The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson.

In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

The Hunger Games is released in the UK on 23rd March.

I really enjoyed the book by Seth Grahame-Smith and having now seen the trailer, I’m bloody excited for the movie adaptation. Benjamin Walker, who plays the titular role looks amazing swinging his axe.

The film explores the secret life of our greatest president, and the untold history that shaped our nation. As a young boy, Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) witnesses the shocking death of his mother, leading him on a path to an ongoing war – and ultimately to the presidency – he chronicles in a hidden diary. The journal reveals the incredible story of a clandestine warrior who never stopped fighting for the country he led and the people he loved.

Prometheus looks set to return the Alien universe back to the brilliance of Ridley Scott’s Alien. There’s a lot riding on this, but judging by the teaser, Prometheus looks stunning.

Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Prometheus was written by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts and stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, and Patrick Wilson.

Prometheus is set to be released on 8th June 2012. What do you think of the teaser..?

Directed by Paul Cotrulia, Modified is a sci-fi thriller that is currently in post production and is set in the underground world of tech based body modification. SFX screened a special 10 minute convention trailer for the film at the SFX Weekender held at the beginning of the month.

Modified is directed by Paul Cotrulia and stars John Sandeman, Robert Dawson, Cory Sanders, Lia Albers, Megan Anstee and Gabriel Constantin. Expected release date is Autumn 2012.

Event Films’ release 10 minute trailer for science fiction thriller Modified.

EVENT FILMS’ RELEASE CONVENTION TRAILER FOR SCIENCE FICTION THRILLER MODIFIED; IT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY BY DIRECTOR PAUL COTRULIA.

London, UK (Friday, February 3rd, 2012) A 10 minute trailer for science fiction thriller Modified was screened today at the SFX Weekender before being released online.

*The Modified convention trailer was screened at the SFX Weekender.
*The trailer was released online after the convention screening.
*The film will be released in the United Kingdom this autumn.

One of the highlights of this year’s SFX Weekender, the British science fiction convention that boasts over 3,000 attendees was the first screening of the Modified convention trailer. This was the first time that footage from Director Paul Cotrulia’s highly stylized and ambitious movie was screened to an audience anywhere in the world.

The 10 minute trailer was made available online shortly after the convention screening. It is already well on its way to becoming a viral video on the popular media sharing website www.youtube.com

Modified boasts an international cast of actors including John Sandeman, Robert Dawson, Cory Sanders, Lia Albers, Joe Law, Megan Anstee and Gabriel Constantin as cyberpunk antiheroes in a high-tech world of easy sex and death.

Kerr (Cory Sanders) searches an underground world of illegal body modification with technology for Cole (Lia Albers) the woman he loves, but soon finds himself caught in a battle for control of the Modification scene. Their world will be torn apart.

Event Films are handling domestic distribution and will be announcing an autumn 2012 release date shortly.

Born Villain is a short film directed by actor Shia LaBeouf in collaboration with Marilyn Manson. It was released on August 28, 2011, during its inaugural screening, at the L.A. Silent Theater. Produced as an accompaniment to Marilyn Manson’s eighth studio album, the film was intended as the record’s promotional “trailer”.

Jurassic Park is heading back to cinemas this September in the UK – sorry rest of the world. Not only do we get the chance to see one Spielberg’s finest movies back on the big screen, Jurassic Park is being re-released in a brand new digital print. So why re-release it? Well the whole Jurassic Park trilogy is being released on Blu-ray for the first time in October.

Sylvester McCoy, who portrayed the seventh Doctor, was asked to read one of the newer scripts to come out of the classic British TV show Doctor Who. McCoy’s Doctor. The reading at the request of a Dragon*Con 2011 panel moderator, who wanted to dispel the idea that McCoy was a bad doctor by giving him some good dialogue. McCoy was given Matt Smith’s The Pandorica Opens speech, which he brings to life superbly.

It’s a shame that Tucker & Dale vs. Evil isn’t going to get a big theatrical release here and in the USA. By all accounts this film is all kinds of frakking awesome. It also stars two brilliant actors in the title roles, Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk.

Fright Night is almost here in the UK and so here are a few more clips to whet your appetite.

Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.

German film Hell, written and directed by Tim Fehlbaum, is about a post apocalytic future where the Sun has scorched the Earth into a wasteland. Produced by Roland Emmerich, director of disaster movies 2012, The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day, Hell is set to open in Germany in September. Release dates for other countries have not been announced yet.

The trailer and premise is very intriguing and I love foreign sci-fi movies. This should be one to watch out for.

It was once the source of life, light and warmth. But now the sun has turned the entire world into a baked and barren wasteland. Forests are scorched. Animal carcasses line the roads. Even the nights are dazzlingly bright. Maria, her little sister Leonie and Phillip are heading for the mountains in a car with tinted glass. Rumour has it water can still be found there. It is a hazardous trip to nowhere. Along the way, they run into Tom. He turns out to be a first-rate mechanic and becomes indispensable. But can they trust him? The tension grows. As if things weren’t bad enough, they are lured into an ambush and their real battle for survival begins…

Here’s the first trailer and teaser poster for Underworld: Awakening, with Kate Beckinsale making a welcome return to the series. I’ve enjoyed all of the films to date and I loved how all the British actors kept coming back to the franchise. I’m really looking forward to seeing Selene return and kicking butt.

Synopsis:

After being held in a coma-like state for fifteen years, vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) learns that she has a fourteen-year-old vampire/Lycan hybrid daughter, Nissa, and when she finds her they must stop BioCom from creating super Lycans that will kill them all.

Underworld: Awakening is set to be released in 3D on 20th January 2012 and stars Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, Charles Dance Sandrine Holt, Kris Holden-Ried, Richard Cetrone and Robert Lawrenson.

Teaser trailer for Ryan Murphy’s and Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story. Premièring in the US on FX 5th October, by all accounts, this’ll be the scariest show on TV.

American Horror Story revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish. The All Star cast features Dylan McDermott (The Practice) as “Ben Harmon,” a psychiatrist; Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) as “Vivien Harmon,” Ben’s wife; Taissa Farmiga as “Violet,” the Harmon’s teenage daughter; Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Blue Sky, Grey Gardens) in her first-ever regular series TV role as “Constance,” the Harmon’s neighbour; Evan Peters (One Tree Hill) as “Tate Langdon,” one of Ben’s patients; and Denis O’Hare (The Good Wife) as “Larry Harvey.” Guest stars for the series include Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) and Alexandra Breckenridge (Dirt) as the Harmon’s housekeepers; and Jamie Brewer as Constance’s daughter.
