Chris Carter back with new series

Chris Carter is developing a new sci-fi series called The After.

“[A] thriller which revolves around a mysterious, unexplained event. In the vein of The X Files, The After incorporates elements of science fiction, suspense, and real-world fear and paranoia. “Chris has woven his mythology magic within a very human, grounded story about the moment when we realize all of our worst fears about the world and its future,” said Georgeville CEO Marc Rosen, who co-founded the company earlier this year with Leon Clarance of Motion Picture Capital, the financing arm of Reliance Entertainment.”

Carter is one of those writers I thought would have several series out there, so I’m excited to see what he comes up with after such a long break.

Rutger Hauer joins True Blood season 6 cast

Rutger Hauer is going to play another vampire, this time in season 6 of True Blood. Seems like he’s going to feature quite a bit and may be the next big bad.

S.H.I.E.L.D. TV characters revealed

The characters for Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV characters have been revealed.

SKYE: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD: Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE: Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

All sounds like the classic group dynamics that Whedon is famous for. I can’t wait for this to air.

Former Doctor Who companion hints at return for 50th anniversary

Noel Clarke, who played Mickey Smith has hinted his character may return for the 50th anniversary special for Doctor Who. Given his character is married to Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones, is it possible she will return too? Guess we just have to and see.

Fringe, season 5 will air in the UK on Sky 1 – October 2012
Fox have decided to give Fringe a proper end, giving it a shortened 13 episode final season. Fringe usually airs close to the US air date, and season 5 airs in the US on 28th September.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the next Bond villain?

Bond producers are looking to lock down Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain in Bond 24.

Predators and Terminator sequels unlikely

First up: Predators. The 2010 Robert Rodriguez sequel starring Adrien Brody was a pretty darn good flick, and a return to form for a franchise that had gotten off the rails as of late.

According to Robert Rodriguez, director of the 2010 movie Predators, a recent shake-up at 20th Century Fox has likely derailed any chances for a seque anytime soon – “We were thinking about it. I don’t know, I’ll have to talk to them. They just had a regime change over there – we’ll see what happens.”

And Arnold Schwarzenegger recently told Empire, “I think (producer) Megan Ellison owns the rights to ‘Terminator 16,’ or whatever it is. They have been trying to put a script together but I’ve not seen it, so I’ve no idea. There’s nothing on the drawing board at this point. Nothing on the plan.”

So it looks like neither franchise will be making it back onto the big screen for some foreseeable time.

J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron to team up for new pilot

J.J. Abrams is set to produce a possible new show for NBC. Alfonso Cuaron, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, will co-write and direct the pilot. The as yet untitled pilot is about a girl with special powers that will grow over seven years, and the man who is broken out of prison to protect her until then.

Carrie Fisher has been quite open about her drug past while working on the Star Wars trilogy. Circulating the web this week, is this fun fact – you can actually see evidence of it in The Return of the Jedi. Check out her first finger on co-star Harrison Ford’s shoulder.

In other interviews Carrie Fishers has given over the years, she recalls partaking in drug taking with members of the Star Wars cast on the Hoth set.

Len Wiseman to direct ‘The Mummy‘ remake for 2014

Producers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jon Spaihts, with Universal are bringing The Mummy back to the big screen after the successful franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz .

The trio have chosen Len Wiseman to direct the remake, and this time The Mummy will have a modern setting.

When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.

Matt Smith to appear at MCM London

Matt Smith will be appearing at MCM Expo London Comic Con at ExCel on Friday 26 October. The Eleventh Doctor will be at the MCM theatre, chatting about all things Doctor Who and launching the new Doctor Who Series 7, Part 1 DVD (released 29th October). It will also be streamed online for any fans that can’t make it.

A very cool animated trailer for Rian Johnson’s sci-fi thriller Looper.

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

Adam Levermore’s cheeky fan made video job application S.H.I.E.L.D.E.D. for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.

The stated goal of this short film is to catch the eye of the production designer for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, and hopefully be so impressive that hiring me is a no-brainer. I realized, though, that it’s much more than that. The finished piece wound up being so high-quality that it stands alone as a spotlight for my design work. I designed all the art elements of the piece, from the ID badges to the dossiers to the copy of the Daily Bugle to the “Employee of the Month” plaque for Maria Hill. I even drew Nick Fury’s right-side-only drawing of the Avengers. Everything that isn’t part of the building or being worn by the actors was my design work, and I think it really shows what I can do to bring a unified, coherent feel to a fictional world. No matter what the project is, if you’re watching this piece with an eye towards hiring me, I think you’ll come away with a really good idea of the value I bring to the table.

Michael Bay’s to film fifth Transformers movie

Even though he and the movies have had their criticisms, Michael Bay may be set to film a fifth Transformers movie. Glenn Morshower, who played a military leader in the previous installments said “After I did the opening ceremonies for the [Transformers theme park] ride, Steven Spielberg walked up to me and chatted and said ‘You know we’ve got you set to do the fourth one and probably the fifth one on the heels of that. So, I guess in December we are on our way to making 4 and 5.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to get Royal premiere

The first part of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy has been chosen for this year’s 65th Royal Film Performance and will premiere in London on 12th December.

Dredd sequel not likely after poor takings

Despite being a pretty good action movie, Dredd has performed poorly at the box office. This means it’s highly unlikely we’ll get another movie based on the classic British comic. Dredd didn’t meet the estimates of $9 million to $10 million in its first weekend in the United States, pulling in an about $6.3 million instead. Unfortunately it hasn’t even done well enough in the UK and other countries to compensate for the poor US takings.

It’s a real shame as Dredd is actually really good and the Slo-Mo effects are stunning. They didn’t go easy on the violence which is very graphic in part. Dredd is stil out, you should go see it.

New Hulk movie?

Everyone loved Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner and Hulk in The Avengers movie and now Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is considering the prospect. “Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in ‘Avengers’? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until [after] ‘Avengers 2.’ So there’s a lot of time to think about it. Part of what’s fun about the way we played him in ‘Avengers’ is the ensemble quality of it. I think the pathos and humor, most importantly, that Mark and Joss brought to it showcased a different element of Hulk that’s there in the comics, and was always inherent in his character. But when he was so brooding in his other two films, he didn’t get to have that wry sense of humor that Mark did such an amazing job performing.”

The Cabin In The Woods Blu-ray disc faults

Having been dicked about with the multiple versions of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers (Assemble) in the UK, none of which has his commentary; there’s now a problem with an authoring fault on Lionsgate’s UK Blu-ray of The Cabin In The Woods.

The disc does play, but it annoyingly freezes briefly at eleven points in the film. If your disc is one of those affected, you can email cabin@technicolor.com to ask for a replacement. You’ll need to provide proof of purchase. You’ll be asked to scan that and send it in or if you ordered online, you’ll be asked to supply a copy of the order confirmation email. Retailers like Amazon have acted quickly to withdraw the Blu-ray from sale because of this technical issue.

Lionsgate say replacement discs are now in production and are asking customers to return their Blu-ray to the retailer where it was purchased (along with their receipt). Check their Cabin In The Woods Facebook page for further updates.

The DVD version is unaffected.

Philip Pullman rewrites Grimm Tales

Philip Pullman has taken a break from writing a companion novel, The Book Of Dust, to the His Dark Materials trilogy, to put his own spin on fifty of the Grimms’ classic fairytales.

Grimm Tales for Young and Old is published by Penguin Classics on 27 September 2012.

Peter Jackson would love to direct Doctor Who episode

Peter Jackson has revealed that would love to direct Doctor Who and it looks like the BBC might be open to the idea.

Executive producer Caro Skinner said “It is beyond wonderful that Peter is a fan of the show and it’s beyond flattering that he’d even think about it,” says Skinner. “I’m absolutely sure that we couldn’t afford him but, you know, we can always negotiate. His enthusiasm is just fantastic of course.”

“Of course at some point we’d love to bring Doctor Who down under . . . it won’t be possible until at least a year after the 50th anniversary. We are already two-thirds of the way through the shoots of series seven and although we filmed a couple of episodes abroad I can confirm for the rest of series seven we will be shooting entirely in Cardiff Bay.”

Danie Ware is the publicist and event organiser for cult entertainment retailer Forbidden Planet. She has been immersed in the science-fiction and fantasy community for the past decade. An early adopter of blogging, social media and a familiar face at conventions, she appears on panels as an expert on genre marketing and retailing.

Danie’s debut novel, Ecko: Rising follows a savage, gleefully cynical anti-hero immersed in his own fantasy world. Ecko joins a misfit cast of characters and strives to conquer his deepest fears and save the world.

GSFN: Tell us how Ecko Rising came about.

Danie: From a starry-eyed youth of writing ‘what if’ fiction – fun fic rather than fan fic!

In 2008, I went to EasterCon for the first time in 15 years and found myself back in the industry. It gave me the confidence to start writing again, to pick up those old threads and weave them properly – I put the first few chapters on Googlepages and the response from my Twitter friends was huge. It was also picked up by an author who promised to show them to his publisher – and it all snowballed from there.

GSFN: The main character, Ecko is quite the anti-hero – an antagonistic protagonist if you will. Did his character make it more challenging to write the book?

Danie: I think he made it easier – his dark, biting humour and sharp insight give the story an energy that carries it forwards. Sometimes, I’d write when I was angry, and Ecko would give me an outlet for that anger; sometimes, his sardonic views of classic fantasy situations and archetypes just wrote themselves. He could be quite unpredictable, though, and there were times he’d ignore the chapter plan completely and just do his own thing!

GSFN: You’ve taken two genres, sci-fi and fantasy and have created a subtle cohesive story. What do think of the more ‘in your face’ mash ups such as historical characters fighting vampires and zombies? Julian May is a very popular author who achieved an exciting blend of sci-fi and fantasy, do you make any contrasts to your own work or does it not compare?

Danie: Julian May’s ‘Exiles’ saga is one of my absolute favourite reads – she did past and future, SF and fantasy, anthropology and politics, all woven expertly in the same story. It’s astounding writing; I’ve never come across anything else like it. Her story is subtle, intricate, flawlessly crafted – a complete antithesis to the current trend for ‘Everything Vs Zombies’ mash-ups.

Being honest here, I’ve not actually read one of the latter – though I do like the fact that genre boundaries are being confronted, and are coming down, now more than ever. Julian May is one of my inspirations. As for Jane Austen thumping the undead with a spade – well, good on you girl, let’s hope you pave the way for some more freethinking!

GSFN: How did it feel to see Ecko Rising in book form for the time?

Overwhelming – the first time my editor showed me the cover art, it had me in tears (no kidding)! With each stage of the book’s production – acceptance, editorial, art, proof copy, reviews, final product – there’s been a new rush of nervousness and wonder. Seeing something that’s been in my head slowly conjured to life has been a magical thing.

On occasion, I’ve been lucky enough to be present when an author has seen their finished book for the first time – and it’s made me realise that the wonder never palls. And that’s perhaps the best thing of all.

GSFN: You have a dream fangirls’/boys’ job, working for one of the well-known comic book stores in the UK. How has this day job environment influenced your writing?

Danie: If anything, it’s raised the bar! When you’re surrounded by the industry – not only its creators, but its critics and fans and retailers and shoppers and marketeers, you have an insight into the whole process that’s pretty scary. Add to that the sheer heavyweight of talent that regularly comes through FP, and it’s a heck of thing to try and live up to!

It’s also made it surreal – things like seeing my own name on company schedules and setting up my own signings have been very bizarre!

GSFN: Your job involves organising signing events with authors. Have you asked for advice from these guest authors when it came to writing professionally? If so, what was the most profound or useful piece of advice given to you?

Danie: In a word: no. There’s nothing more annoying than the badgering wannabe! Some people knew I was writing and would enquire – but that’s all. In fairness through, I’ve friends through my job who’re authors, and they have been incredibly supportive in helping me make sense of the wheels of the professional process.

GSFN: Ecko Rising is a superb debut novel, and it was a pleasure to read. What can we next expect from you Danie?

Thank you very much! I’ve just handed in the first draft of Ecko II, and I have another novel, urban fantasy-ish, with my agent. After that, we will have to see!

Danie Ware’s debut novel Ecko Rising is the tale of the cybernetically enhanced assassin Ecko, who joins a resistance group fighting against a world where people are medicated into servitude. While on reconnaissance to track down the pharmacist responsible for the drug, Dr Grey, Ecko barely survives the mission and finds himself in a virtual world. Whether created by his own unstable mind, the resistance group’s psychiatrist Eliza, or his adversary Dr Grey, Ecko has to play the game, save the world and at the same time, save himself.

Danie writes a rich world filled with large archetypal characters such a the healer, the prophet, the warrior, the thief and of course the evil alchemist. All the while making each one worth caring about – apart from the bad guy, you really want the anti-hero Ecko to kick his ass. Both worlds are blissfully unaware of the threat is it under, suffering the same sort of apathy as Ecko’s London; where chemists/alchemists plot to rule the world, with only a small group of people fighting against the evil. There’s quite a lot of violence and a smattering of sex, and yet it never feel gratuitous. It always fits the plot rather than having it for the sake of it. Danie writes in such a way as you can clearly visualise the worlds she is describing. You can feel the the rake of a monster’s claw; the knife or sword blade; the heat of sex and fire; and the pain of loss, either life or limb. There are also quite a few unexpected twists; scenes that are brilliantly set up, only to meet swift and cruel ends.

Ecko himself, to say he’s the most interesting character in the book does him little justice. He’s cynical, a cruel wit, rebellious, selfish and uncaring. The first half of Ecko Rising I found myself not liking him, yet funny; a pain and yet siding with him. As the book, and the program he’s stuck in plays itself out, Ecko begins to see that he can care for those around him, even the fantasy characters of Varchinde. I found him more and more likeable, even as he keeps up bad behaviour to those around him. An anti-hero, Ecko slowly becomes a champion.

What I founds truly brilliant was that the reader plays the role of Ecko, just as the author plays the role of the psychiatrist Eliza. Danie fucks with the reader’s head, never knowing if the world is based in Ecko’s mind or an actual alternate world. The book never plays from Ecko’s point of view alone. We’re introduced to people who may never meet Ecko, yet play large roles within the story. It weaves a number of threads together, only to pick them apart again as Ecko crosses paths with these people. So has Ecko been plugged into virtual world, or has he somehow really ended up a magical fantasy world? Right up to the end, it’s an answer that shifts from one to the other and back again.

An ambitious tale and brilliantly written, Ecko Rising ends by setting up the sequel; one that I am most definitely looking forward to.

1 Live, One Dies is a story about releasing the ego upon making the physical death transition. Misfortune grips hold of an ambiguous relationship between Crafton and Tirique, over a misunderstanding. That’s what happens when people don’t communicate with one another, and instead, allows their trust and abandonment issues to get in the way of them both enjoying the great life intended.

The story behind the film: an inspiring Artist-Photographer by the name of Tirique, and Crafton a medium Tarot Card reader, both committed suicide at the same time, and are now in an “Otherworldly After-Life between moving on through to the next dimensional level and Earth. Before moving through the light into the next dimensional level, Tirique decides to return to his most recent Earthly incarnation to correct what he perceives as wrongs done to him by Crafton.

Not really succeeding in his attempt, and repeating the exact same actions over again, he commits suicide again, is now dead to the physical world once more, but doesn’t know it. Wandering around in a field he meets OGE, a powerful nemesis.

OGE knows that Tirique has returned forward in the “Otherworldly After-Life again, looking for Crafton, and will do everything in his power to entice Tirique with temptations, and convince him that all’s the same. OGE, is Tirique’s ego, and the ego is the last that he must surrender before he can make his transition.

It’s not long before Tirique conquers OGE, and then go in search of Crafton, which he doesn’t recognize once he sees him again. Crafton must help Tirique understand that he went back to his last incarnation to make wrongs, right. Tirique will have some difficulty believing this.

Metaphysics behind the film:
On a mundane Earthly level, Tirique abandons and separate himself from Crafton because he betrayed him.

On a spiritual level, Crafton is an archetype that represents the Inner Being/Spirit that Tirique distance himself from, only to fall prey to the demands of his ego.

Carole is Professor of English and Director of Creative Studies in Writing at Alverno College in Milwaukee. She writes a monthly crime fiction column and regular reviews and features for newspapers. She contributed a chapter to the Hugo award-winning non-fiction anthology Chicks Dig Time Lords.

The BBC have released these cool movie style posters for the new Doctor Who series. The posters are for each of the first five episodes.

Doctor Who series 7 returns to BBC One at 7:20pm on Saturday 2nd September and stars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.

Well the bank holiday in the UK is the usual wet washout as always, so why not go out watch the new sci-fi comedy The Watch. Here’s a couple of clips to get you in the mood.

Independent British Science Fiction Film Modified is to Premiere at London’s Cult Movie Theatre. The film will premiere at The Prince Charles Cinema on Wednesday, September 12th 2012.

Modified is a dark science fiction thriller set in an underground world of body modification with technology. The film boasts an international cast of actors including John Sandeman, Robert Dawson, Cory Sanders, Lia Albers, Joe Law, Megan Anstee, Egija Zviedre and Gabriel Constantin as cyberpunk antiheroes in a high-tech world of easy sex and death.

Kerr (Cory Sanders) searches an underground world of illegal body modification with technology for Cole (Lia Albers) the woman he loves, but soon finds himself caught in a battle for control of the modification scene. Their world will be torn apart.

I totally passed him in complete ignorance yesterday (14th August 2012), I went back to try and get a look once my friend said he was there but I was ushered on by staff. How could I have missed Matt Smith?! I was at the premier of the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who, Asylum Of The Daleks, and I had missed Matt Smith. The shame!

However, despite letting myself down somewhat, the new episode of our hallowed show did not. In fact it was one of the single best viewing experiences of my entire life, not only because it was on the big screen at the BFI in the heart of London; not only because we were all surrounded by the cast and crew and writers from Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Stephen Moffat, not only because other people from the shows history also surrounded us such as Nicola Byrant (who played Peri back during Colin Baker’s stint as the doctor). But also because the episode was packed full of huge surprises, surprises that not even a room full of middle aged men who live their lives on the forums had guessed! Once again Stephen Moffat has turned around to fans and said “I bet you didn’t see that coming.” We sure hadn’t!

Matt Smith was back to his brilliant self in this story which is probably the most original Dalek story since the show was brought back to our screens in 2005, and dare I say it, out of the entire classic series too! It is like nothing we have seen before; Stephen Moffat has really pulled this one out of the bag. I don’t even recall a classic series episode that quite attempted anything like this episode has. As promised, it features every single type of Dalek that has ever appeared into the show back from the 1960′s to present day; plus to the delight of fans, I can confirm there is a worth while explanation to the old-style Daleks showing up.

Not only is every Dalek ever in it, but the Moff-Meister has managed to do what many many writers have failed to do. He has brought the fear and tension back to the Daleks. Some moments are dark and vile, just a Dalek moment should be. It seems the show is starting to find the right balance with the Daleks, whereby the most dangerous warriors the universe has ever produced get defeated and apparently destroyed every time their show they pop up with a new sinister plan.

Some fan trivia for you now, Russel T Davies, former show runner and head writer’s Dalek which inhabits his hallway at his Manchester apartment, does actually appear in this episode as Stephen Moffat wanted it to become a canonized Dalek!

I urge all fans to avoid spoilers, and if you are unfortunate enough to encounter them, please do not share them with others. Some of the surprises concealed within this episode brilliantly highlight Moffat’s sheer genius and cunning. For your own enjoyments sake, do not spoil it for yourself!

It’s important to note just how far along Amy’s and Rory’s relationship has come from when we last saw them, without giving away too much as to how they’ve changed, I must say that both Karen’s and Arthur’s performances together were stunning and almost had me in tears. There are almost two separate stories within this episode, the one with the Daleks, and the one about the Pond’s relationship.

Writing a spoiler free preview is very hard, So a few teasers can’t hurt can they? One location will amaze you. One woman will leave you asking lots of questions, such as “where did you get the milk?”

Stephen Moffat gave away a few details about the up coming series (broken into two mini-seasons, of 5 episodes and 8 episodes a piece, including one at Christmas); so long to two partners, each week will be a brand new ‘blockbuster’ adventure, a weekly movie condensed into 45 minutes without the boring bits. Asylum of the Daleks definitely fulfilled this promise.

For all you horror fans, here’s a YouTube video featuring about 190 films. YouTube user kidziakandkeogh, has counted some of the franchises like A Nightmare on Elm and Friday 13th as one so it knocks his count down to 163.

Nevertheless, it’s pretty impressive.

Okay, I’m a bit late posting the new trailer for Doctor Who series 7… But for those who missed it or want to see it again, here it is.

The BBC has released the first promo image for series 7 of Doctor Who. Featuring a miffed looking Matt Smith as The Doctor, carrying an unconscious or maybe dead Amy Pond (Karen Gillan); it also features many of the Dalek incarnations staring from the 60s, right up to the new series.
