Hellboy II: The Golden Army

GSFN Show 26: The Gay Chronicles

Fans of the Gay Sci-Fi Nerds Podcast Show are in a treat as Skip and Drew present the show 26, The Gay Chronicles, in what turns out to be their longest show yet. In this fudge packed show Drew shows his softer side with a poem dedicated to MoPod Show’s Peasha titled “An Ode to Peasha – or Five Portions of Peasha a Day”.

Skip plugs Sci-Fi-London: Oktoberfest 2008, which is a sci-fi film festival taking place on 3rd October at the Apollo Cinema West End in London. Skip and Drew will be attending one of the three themed screenings planned for the weekend which include, Anime All-Night, Laugh Until It Hurts and A Night With The Undead. If you’re a sci-fi fan and a Gay Sci-Fi Nerds Podcast Show fan, make sure you find Skip and Drew at the zombie all-nighter, A Night With The Undead screenings.

Skip and Drew talk about all the other films they’ve seen recently (and not so recently), which include Hancock, Kung Fu Panda, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Forbidden Kingdom and The Happening.

Drew talks helps out a fan with news about Tripods and Skip get narked with 20th Century Fox trying to stop the release of Warner Bros’ Watchmen film. Skip makes a bold statement about Alan Moore relinquishing his rights to bitch when he sold the rights to his graphic novels to big film companies.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

More in depth movie discussions ensue for Get Smart, Dante 01 and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Was Get Smart as good as the original series? Did Steve Carrell do a good job as Maxwell Smart? One thing’s for sure, both your hosts had a boner for Anne Hathaway, SCHWING! Dante 01’s psuedo religious contexts and strange ending have Skip and Drew pondering and Guilliermo del Toro’s artistic vision in Hellboy II: The Golden Army splits opinion. Was it too close to Pan’s Labyrinth or has del Toro found a unique style for his fantasy films?

I do have to say I fell a little bad for M. Night Shyamalan. I loved everything he’s done so far except I think he could have done a better job on The Village, and the screenplay for Stuart Little. I think he’s an artist trying to survive in the commercial world of hollywood. Clearly he tries to take risks and do different things like Lady in the Water which was supposed to be his spin on a classic Grimm type FairyTale (you know the kind of bedtime story you tell your kids and it scares the crap out of them and it ends up costing them thousands of dollars in therapy as adults). The critics here mostly were pegging him as the guy whose only talent was the twist at the end, so he went a bit of a different way with Signs, Lady In the Water, and Happening. Lady in the Water does have somewhat of a twist towards the end, but it’s much more subtle than like in The Village or Sixth
    Sense.

I love M. Night, and I am a huge fan. And I think he’s kinda sexy too. :P

Anyway I liked the Happening as well, not sure exactly what was going on with the acting. Mark Walberg who I know can do a great job at acting just seemed like his character was pretty disconnected. I don’t know if the character was written that way but he just seemed so dorky. Normally I can find the dorky thing charming, but it was just awkward in this performance. Zooey Deschenel, I don’t understand why she’s even acting, I can’t remember one role that’s she’s done that’s been remotely memorable . But there is one little bit of Trivia that not many people noticed and it takes a good eye to see it, but the guy driving the Jeep during the John Leguizamo scenes was Brian O’Halleran from Clerks, ClerksII ,Dogma and a bunch of Kevin Smith movies.

  2. I’m a big fan of Shyamlan’s Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs, and to a certain extent The Happening. Perhaps the acting let it down more than the story did. I’ve no idea what Mark Wahlberg was thinking when he was acting the way he did. Zooey Deschanel was great in the TV series Weeds and plays kooky strange girl very well.

The Happening is certainly the right direction for Shyamalan to take after his previous couple of films.

  3. Hi GSFN’s ..
Good fun podcast :) and i gotta say.. its still crap here in Morecambe.
ohh and it pisses down all the time ..
    Take care Guys
    Mark

  4. Hi Mark,
Glad you’re enjoying the podcast. I know we were making fun of Morecambe, but in all seriousness Drew has family ties there and I do enjoy taking our dog for walks along the promenade as the view is stunning (when you can see it past the rain). We were lucky with the weather on the bank holiday weekend and it was on the Friday and Saturday.

However, that said, Drew was wondering if you could send us a picture on an old person sleeping or dying in a bus shelter ;)

  5. Hi there from the US of A. I just wanted to pop in an say that I loved the latest show. I really was excited to hear that they are making a movie about Tripods. I loved the series when I was a yougster, and haven’t been catch up on them in a long time. My wife and I are huge Sci-Fi fans, and in the LGBTQ community. I hope that you keep up the shows, and I will be tunning in to get my sci-fi news from now on. Looks like I have a few episodes to listen to still.

Doctor who Rocks BTW. (Me= huge doctor who fan)

Love the reviews, and the fact that you have such detailed show notes, to keep me ocupied while I am on the Train to work.

    Hugs
