With a name like Haven, you’d expect this smash-hit US series to be cosy and warm – instead it’s one of the spookiest, quirkiest and most enthralling shows from the US hitting Syfy UK!
Co-produced between Syfy and E1 Entertainment Haven is based on the Stephen King novella The Colorado Kid – fans of the horrormeister should keep their eyes peeled for references to his work throughout the run – and stars Emily Rose (ER), Eric Balfour (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Lucas Bryant (Odyssey 5). With credentials like that, it can’t go wrong.
With irreverent humour and quirky characters, Haven lives on the same street as A Town Called Eureka.
Shot in the World Heritage Site of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, it explores the lives of the residents of the picture perfect town of Haven, Maine, as seen through the eyes of FBI agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose), who soon realises the place’s outward serenity hides its residents’ many secrets.
Sent to investigate a mysterious death, Audrey stumbles upon a host of curious incidents in Haven, and a connection to her own past – and destiny.
Settling in as both a new resident and the latest recruit to the police force, she enlists the help of local detective Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant) and the roguish Duke Crocker (24’s Eric Balfour).
Nathan’s father is Haven’s Chief of Police, but as well as being a well-connected ally, he’s also got a rather unique condition: he can’t feel pain, at all. A useful trait, or just another of the town’s many unexplained phenomena?
Audrey is thrown straight in at the deep end in the pilot, Welcome To Haven (Thursday 7 October), as she stumbles across the town’s perplexing history. While investigating the death of an escaped prisoner she meets someone who can control the weather, and along the way learns of the mystery of The Colorado Kid. This opening installment also features a guest appearance by former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine star Nicole de Boer.
In Butterfly (Thursday 14 October), Audrey decides to stay in Haven to investigate The Colorado Kid, but the town has other ideas, and she ends up looking into the destruction of a bar and a series of incidents targeting her and several others.
Harmony (Thursday 21 October) sees Audrey settle into her new job, before teaming up with Nathan to investigate the upheaval at a local psychiatric hospital where the patients have become sane, while the doctors have gone mad.
And the agent has food for thought in Consumed (Thursday 28 October) when she tries to gets to the bottom of what’s wrong with the meals being served at a local restaurant.
Haven series 1 premieres on Syfy UK 7th October 2010
