Guest blogger and my little sister Jasmine Rice reviews the third instalment of the wonderful Toy Story series.
2010’s most eagerly anticipated film for the summer is nearly upon us. 15 years after the original, and 11 years after the last instalment, Toy Story 3 is finally here. The film picks up when Andy is 17 is getting ready to move to college. Worried about their future, the toys believe that Andy no longer wants them and that they’re not special to him any more now that he’s grown up and they begin to imagine a future of never being played with again. As usual the film follows the structure of its predecessors as the action kicks off when the toys are misplaced. Finding themselves at Sunnyside Day Care they are warmly welcomed by the other toys at the Centre but all is not as it seems…
Sunnyside is a place where toys are always played by the kids, but the action happens after hours. Finding themselves in a situation less than desirable, can the gang stick together? All of our old favourites are there, and there are also new additions including a too-cute-to-be-true bear and a thespian hedgehog, along with a heap of ‘new toys’ thrown into the mix. Oh, and look out for a side of Buzz that’s never been seen before, you’re guaranteed to love him even more.

This is the first of the three films to be shown in 3D and quite frankly its use of the ever popular form of media is fantastic. There are no cheap thrills, no rabbits out of hats, just subtle and sophisticated use of 3D to add to an already sophisticated film. The plot is similar to many of the Disney/Pixar animations but there is such wittiness in the writing, and such powerful, and surprisingly emotional, scenes that there isn’t the overhanging sense of predictability that is found in films of similar style.
One of the underlying themes of the film is the sense of growing up and moving on, and that’s exactly what this film does. The next generation is what this film is all about and Toy Story 3 has taken a step in the right direction with its use of next generation cinema, and is truly in a league of its own. For those of you who remember Toy Story when it first came out, do not fear, it is not only for the children of today. Made for children and adults alike, the latest Toy Story will you have you laughing one minute and welling up the next , it really is an emotional roller-coaster of a film. The film finds the perfect balance between laughs for the kids and laughs for the mums and dads and all the adults in between. The ending is bitter-sweet, heart-warming, and I can without a doubt say that Toy Story 3 will be a breath of fresh air this summer.
‘Toy Story 3’ is in UK cinemas in Disney Digital 3D and 2D from Monday 19th July 2010.
