Sci-fi shots: Doctor Who, S.H.I.E.L.D., True Blood and Chris Carter

Daily digest of some of the sci-fi and fantasy news that’s caught our eye including: Returning Doctor Who companions and Chris Carter returning with a new sci-fi series.

Chris Carter back with new series

Chris Carter is developing a new sci-fi series called The After.

“[A] thriller which revolves around a mysterious, unexplained event. In the vein of The X Files, The After incorporates elements of science fiction, suspense, and real-world fear and paranoia. “Chris has woven his mythology magic within a very human, grounded story about the moment when we realize all of our worst fears about the world and its future,” said Georgeville CEO Marc Rosen, who co-founded the company earlier this year with Leon Clarance of Motion Picture Capital, the financing arm of Reliance Entertainment.”

Carter is one of those writers I thought would have several series out there, so I’m excited to see what he comes up with after such a long break.

Rutger Hauer joins True Blood season 6 cast

Rutger Hauer is going to play another vampire, this time in season 6 of True Blood. Seems like he’s going to feature quite a bit and may be the next big bad.

S.H.I.E.L.D. TV characters revealed

The characters for Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV characters have been revealed.

SKYE: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD: Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE: Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

All sounds like the classic group dynamics that Whedon is famous for. I can’t wait for this to air.

Former Doctor Who companion hints at return for 50th anniversary

Noel Clarke, who played Mickey Smith has hinted his character may return for the 50th anniversary special for Doctor Who. Given his character is married to Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones, is it possible she will return too? Guess we just have to and see.

Chris Meloni teaser for True Blood season 5

Chris Meloni is joining the fifth series of True Blood this summer and the vampire Roman. Meloni plays the extremely powerful and ancient vampire Roman, the guardian of the governing body for all vampires, the Vampire Authority. He’s also the mastermind behind the mainstreaming movement, which aimed to integrate vampires into human society.

HBO has also release some promotional posters featuring the tagline “everything is at stake”.

True Blood returns to FX UK this autumn, meaning we don’t have to wait too long after the US airings.

NSFW: True Blood “Method Shapeshifting”

OMG! True Blood‘s “not so little Tommy Mickens” (Marshall Allan) gets his bits out for this Funny or Die skit with co-star Janina Gavankar who plays Sam’s new love interest and shapeshifter, Luna Garza. Marshall Allan takes method acting to a whole new level as he and Janina Gavankar shoot their first True Blood scene together.

The only thing I can say is DAMN YOU PIXELATIONS!!! I wonder if there’s an unedited version out there…?

True Blood series 2 on DVD and Blu-ray

Welcome back to Bon Temps, home to mystery, Southern sensuality and dark secrets. For Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), life is more dangerous than ever after she and Bill (Stephen Moyer) become more deeply involved. Meanwhile, Tara (Rutina Wesley) finds herself under a lover’s spell; Sam (Sam Trammel) puts his trust in an unlikely ally; Jason (Ryan Kwanten) becomes involved with an anti-vampire sect; Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) becomes interested in Sookie after he recruits her to investigate the disappearance of his 2,000-year-old maker; and Maryann (Michelle Forbes) is revealed to possess a power that can control almost everyone in town. Then, after making a shocking discovery, Sookie, Bill and Sam must form the last line of defence against a diabolical plan that raises this award-winning series to bloody new heights.

Clothes fall to the floor almost as often as blood spatters the walls in this show that blends supernatural horror, sex, and mystery, with just a little bit of social commentary thrown in for good measure.
